Here’s how to organize your closet like a pro—and keep it that way.
1. Take Everything Out
Yes, everything. Lay it all out so you can truly see what you own. This is the perfect moment to be honest with yourself about what you wear and what you don’t.
Tip: Separate clothes into piles: Keep, Donate, Sell, Mend, and Maybe. If you haven’t worn something in over a year, it probably belongs in one of the latter four.
2. Clean Your Space
Before you put anything back, give your closet a quick clean. Wipe down shelves, vacuum or sweep the floor, and add a fresh scent (think cedar blocks or lavender sachets) to keep things feeling luxe and fresh.
3. Sort by Category and Season
Group your items into categories like:
-
Tops
-
Bottoms
-
Dresses
-
Outerwear
-
Shoes
-
Accessories
Then, if your space is limited, store off-season pieces elsewhere—under the bed, in storage bins, or at the back of the closet.
4. Create a System That Works for You
Organize by color, occasion, or frequency of use—whatever feels most natural.
Color Coordination: Arrange by rainbow order (ROYGBIV) to make choosing outfits more visual and fun.
-
By Category + Length: For example, short-sleeve tops, then long-sleeve blouses, then sweaters.
-
Work vs. Weekend: Separate your workwear from casual clothes for faster weekday decisions.
5. Use the Right Tools
Closet organization tools can make all the difference. A few game-changers:
-
Slim, non-slip hangers to maximize space and prevent slippage
-
Shelf dividers to keep stacks from toppling
-
Clear bins for accessories or handbags
-
Over-the-door organizers for shoes, belts, or scarves
6. Make Accessories Visible
Out of sight, out of mind. Display jewelry, sunglasses, and bags in a way that encourages use. Think clear trays, hooks, or even a pegboard wall.
7. Maintain with a Monthly Mini-Edit
Once a month, do a quick check-in. Remove anything unworn, re-fold sloppy stacks, and rearrange items that are out of place. Staying on top of it will prevent another closet explosion later
Organizing your closet is less about Pinterest-perfect perfection and more about creating a space that reflects your style and makes your daily routine easier. Your wardrobe should feel inspiring, not overwhelming.
So pour a coffee, play your favorite playlist, and give your closet the glow-up it deserves.
